John Palmer has composed some 120 works for a wide range of musical forces.  His more than 60 solo instrumental works include those for accordion, cello, clarinet, flute, guitar, harp, harpsichord, oboe, organ, percussion, piano, shakuhachi, sythesizer, trombone, viola and violin.  Chamber works include those for both standard and unusual duo, trio, quartet, quintet groupings.

Numerous chamber works also include electronics a field in which Palmer is a leading figure, having also composed a several acousmatic works.

Of the works for ensemble and orchestra, over half feature soloists. Choral works include a tryptich of works for choir and percussion: where to / what else / no us.

Educational works include the listening adventure Sounding the day / Der Tag klingt and the popular Rhythm to go which combines both a rhythm manual for students and professional musicians as well as a concert piece.
